Ichimoku-kai
(First Thursday Meeting)
First Thursday of every month, 6:00pm ~ 10:00pm
What is Ichimoku-kai?
Ichimoku-kai (IMK for short) literally means the "first Thursday meeting" and since 1995
it has been the Canada Japan Society of Toronto's monthly social event,
naturally on the first Thursday of every month. It's a place to make new
friends, meet up with old ones, informally network, and share your interests and
experiences in Japan with like-minded folks.
Who Goes to Ichimoku-kai
Our IMK audience continually evolves. It is a great reflection of the
wide range of members that make up the CJS. Member and guest attendees include Canadians
who've lived and worked in Japan, Japanese living and working or studying in Toronto,
people interested in Japanese language or culture, and people with business ties to Japan.
All these diverse members share a common interest in the bond between our countries and
cultures.
What does Ichimoku-kai have to offer?
IMK is probably the best way for newcomers to meet our members as it
is considered the Canada Japan Society of Toronto's "hub" and attracts the greatest
cross-section of our membership. As a monthly event new people continuously join and
even former members drop by whenever they're visiting Toronto (knowing that we always meet
on the first Thursday of each month). Special groups of non-members with an interest or
connection to Japan are often specially invited to attend, creating "theme" nights.
Admission is free for CJS members, and visitors are welcome for a $5 cover charge.
Ichimoku-kai History
The CJS's Ichimoku-kai had its roots with the Tokyo Canadian Club
in Tokyo, Japan. One of the Canadian expats of the Club returned to Toronto, joined the
CJS, and started our own version of Ichimoku-kai back in 1995. . Since then we've held
it at a number of locations including:
- Roppongi Restaurant
- Sushi Bistro
- Masa Restaurant
- Megumi Restaurant
- Wow Restaurant
- The I.V. Lounge
- The Everest Cafe
We would be honoured to have you join us at Ichimoku-kai.
If you have any questions, or would like to "guest host" (see below) Ichimoku-kai please
contact the IMK Director, Jeff Harju at jeff@cjst.org
Guest Host: Do you have an idea to bring out people with a common interest or
connection to Japan? Looking for a social event to get these people together and
introduce them to the CJS? We're always looking at offering free admission and
advertising to enable like-minded people to come to IMK. Some past successes have
included Japan related members of the Arts and Legal communities, JETAA and JAVA
(Japanese Visitors Association). Again, for more information contact Jeff as above.
