What We’ve Been Up To (Continued from Page Two)

An Evening of Meditation and Transformation -- April 24

Not your normal Friday night outing! Vimala Inoue, a Theravada Buddhist monk presented a workshop on transformation through mindful meditation. The workshop included breathing meditation, walking meditation, movement, voicing and visualizations. Held at the Japan Foundation, this event brought out both seasoned experts as well as curious novices. The evening was a refreshing break from the other events we've recently had and was such a success that we are planning to have a full day workshop in the near future. Thanks to Scott Rutherford and Margaret Buckworth for organizing this event.

An Evening with Robert Fulford -- April 16

Robert Fulford, columnist for The Globe and Mail newspaper, spoke to a large group of CJST members and guests, including members of the Canadian and Japanese media at The Japan Foundation. Mr. Fulford spoke of his time spent in Tokyo through the cooperation of a grant from the Japan Foundation. His observations were insightful, humorous and offered the audience a chance to compare their own experiences in Japan with those of Mr. Fulford's.

We intend to use opportunities such as these gatherings to improve and increase the exchange of information between Canada and Japan in future. Thanks to John Harris and the Japan Foundation for their contribution.

CJST Supper Club -- May 26

Madoka Japanese Restaurant at 252 Dupont (near Spadina) was the location of the latest meeting of the CJST Supper Club. It was great to meet a few new people and to try out a restaurant that most of us had walked by but had never ventured into. The deliciously huge bento set was a great deal! There will be another Supper Club evening later on this summer. Stay tuned.

Gary Turner Farewell Luncheon -- May 29

During the 1980s, Gary Turner headed up Team Japan at the Tokyo branch of the Royal Bank of Canada. In his talk, Gary reminisced about his years in Japan and told us about his experiences such as being part of a motorcycle club that traveled all over the country. The luncheon was organized by John LeBlanc and kindly hosted by McMillan Binch.

Gary and his wife Pam will be moving out to BC later on this summer. For his contribution to the CJST, Gary was presented with a lifetime membership. On behalf of the CJST, we wish you much luck and happiness -- we'll definitely miss you.

Japanese Games Night -- June 16

What were you doing on those long rainy season days in Japan? Maybe you were playing Japanese Monopoly or the Japanese version of The Game of Life -- or maybe you were industrious and tackled goh or mah-jong.

CJSTer Dave Sass learned to play goh while living in Japan. He and Masao Okajima gave a crash course about the basics of the game. This event was organized by Dave Sass and Margaret Buckworth.
