FROM OUR (NEW) LEADER
The CJST warmly welcomes incoming President Scott Rutherford
A FEW MONTHS prior to the 1998 Annual General Meeting,
Rob Bracey let the Board know that he was ready to step down as
CJST President. His shoes are tough to fill, but after three years on the Board
as Membership Director, I decided to take on the Presidency of the CJST.
As the new President of the Canada-Japan Society of Toronto, I would like
to welcome all of our new members and thank all of our members for your
continued support.
With a mandate to provide opportunities to enhance understanding of Japan,
Canada, and Canada-Japan relations, the CJST is manifested whenever our
members gather at an event or are able to exchange information through such
ways as our newsletters, directory or mailings. The Society is nothing more
than our members and what you bring to the Society. The accumulation of
knowledge, experience and achievement is tremendous.
Our membership, which currently consists of 368 individual and 22 corporate
members, covers a broader segment of the Japan-related community in Canada
than any other organization. Students, academics, public officials and
business people comprise the majority of our membership, with all events
open to every one of our members. As an organization completely run by
volunteers I believe that we offer the most diverse and candid perspective
of the Canada-Japan relationship possible.
As the Membership Director for the past three years, I am well aware of the
direct correlation between the activities of the CJST and the membership of
the CJST. I would like to see the quality of our events remain excellent,
while at the same time, expand the core of volunteer event organizers to
include more of our diverse membership. As you know, no CJST event takes
place unless it is by CJST members, and no event should take place unless
it is for CJST members. In particular, I would like to see more CJST events
planned from a Japanese perspective. I personally welcome any interested
volunteers to contact me directly to discuss future activities of the CJST.
The CJST has been able to maintain its original mandate since 1981. I look
forward to working to maintain the Society's excellent traditions during my
term as President.
While we welcome Scott, we would also like to take this opportunity to
thank Rob Bracey for his years spent as President of the CJST. Rob's
enthusiasm and try-anything attitude make it a blast to be part of the
Board. Happily, Rob will remain on the Board as a Director.
