Sumo in Canada
June 6 and 7, 1998 will see Japanese media and sumo fans alike flocking to the PNE Coliseum in Vancouver for the first ever demonstration sumo tournament in Canada. Japanese TV viewers will see 25 hours of coverage of the bouts on TV Asahi. Between bouts they will be cutting to the great sites all around Canada. This will have a dramatic impact on Canadian tourism. To find out more about the event and ticket info check out the website at http://www.sumo-canada.co.jp. (Site may be temporarily out of order. They're rebuilding.) Tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster in Vancouver at (604) 280-4444. There were rumours that there might also be a demonstration bout in Toronto. At press time, however, hope appears to be fading on that front. Nevertheless, it’s a phenomenal way to show Canadians that sumo is not about a bunch of fat guys trying to push each other around! Better still, it’s a super way to promote Canada to Japan.

CJST News Evolves ... Again
We’ve been going through some changes with the Newsletter Committee. Due to his busier than normal schedule and a new baby, the inimitable John Harris has passed the reins on to Ann Parkin. Huge thanks to John for all the work he did on previous newsletters.
Please call Ann if you’re interested in submitting articles, being involved with the Newsletter Committee or if you’re willing to volunteer with semi-regular envelope stuffings.
