CJST News & ReviewsGreat TimesAfter we told them how to run a successful pub night, the folks at the Canada-Japan Society of Ottawa told us about their annual Sake Tasting and Sushi Evening. We thought it was such a great idea that we decided to organize our own evening on February 20 at Masa Restaurant. Jim Tiessen scored some excellent sake, while Masa provided the great sushi. CJST members Ted Goossen and Hugh Wylie provided the evening’s anecdotes about sake production and sake enjoyment! We’re going to run this event again next year. Those of you who couldn’t make it should make sure to be available next year. As you probably know, the Ichimoku-kai is going extremely well. The folks at Sushi Bistro have proven to be excellent hosts. The free karaoke rooms are hugely popular and we are attracting new members, as well as renewals, every month. The first Thursday of every month attracts between 60 and 100 people who come out to kick back, chat or do karaoke. Last August we attempted to host the annual JETAA/CJST baseball challenge at Hanlon’s Point. Unfortunately the weather was far less than desirable so the event had to be cancelled. The sporty CJSTers did make it out for the annual CJST Fall Golf Classic at Glen Eagle in September. As always, we had a great turnout, lots of fun and won some great prizes. There will most definitely be another tournament this fall. If you’re interested in helping to organize, let us know. Great DealsWe have recently struck a deal with Stonebridge Press, a leading distributor of Japanese books and software. CJST members are entitled to a 40% discount on all book titles. Stonebridge Press can be contacted either by the web at http://www.stonebridge.com, E-mail sbp@stonebridge.com, by phone at 1-800-947-7271 or fax (510) 524-8711. At some point we’ll be sending around a list of titles for your review. To order, simply let them know that you are part of the CJST and you’ll receive the discount. Thanks to the people at the Canada-Japan Society in Ottawa for news of this deal. Great ContributionsSince our treasurer, Rob Tran, has been doing such a great job, the CJST remains financially sound and able to do some things that were not previously possible. We are proud to sponsor Five Generations, the excellent photo exhibit of the history of Japanese-Canadians at the ROM. We were also honoured to sponsor the finals of the Canada-wide Japanese Language Speech Contest organized by the Consulate General of Japan. The finals were in Toronto this year so our donation supported travel, accommodation and prizes. Congratulations to CJST MembersCultural Committee Director Alan Middleton received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from York University earlier this year. John and Mindy Harris welcomed their first daughter, Laura on July 5. Rob and Anita Bracey had their second daughter, Leah Kaede Bracey on September 19. Joy Haywood married Vince Rock on August 31. |
